Hippocrates segmented male existence into four phases, mirroring the four humors and elements. Athenian philosopher Solon proposed seven stages, mostly spanning seven years each, corresponding to known celestial bodies. (Adulthood commencing at forty-two lasted fourteen years.) Arnett's research also examines Hindu male life stages historically characterized by role transitions rather than age. The second stage begins with domestic responsibilities in marriage, the third—vanaprastha meaning "forest resident"—commences with a grandson's birth. Talmudic tradition divides post-twenty existence into decade-long increments. Arnett, now in his sixties, finds appealing the Talmudic perspective about "special strength" emerging around eighty, preferable to Solon's model describing sixty-three to seventy as "departing on death's ebbing tide."
